your family or your business.  Following is a brief
biography outlining my education and legal
experience.

I was born in Laconia N.H. on June 2, 1966 and
graduated from the Brandeis School of Law at the
University of Louisville in 2000 where I was a
member of the Brandeis Law Review and received
the Brandeis Writing Award, the International
Academy of Trial Attorneys Trial Advocacy
Award and the Edward Post Litigation Skills
Award.  

Before law school, I graduated cum laud from
Middlebury College in 1988 with a B.A. in
American Literature and then attended the
American Academy of Dramatic Arts from 1988-
1990 before joining the Academy's resident
theater company for its 1990-91 season.  After
attending Columbia University for one semester, I
finished my graduate studies at Hunter College in
1996 with an M.A. in Theater.

I opened my law office in Staunton, Virginia in the
Spring of 2004 and I handle all facets of divorce
litigation and family law, including spousal and
child support, equitable distribution of property
and child custody.   I have a significant amount of
experience litigating guardianship and conservator
petitions as well as intra-family disputes involving
wills, trusts and fiduciary breaches of duty.

I also defend individuals who are facing criminal
charges in state or federal court.  I have handled
dozens of bench and jury trials throughout Virginia
involving issues ranging from DUI through First
Degree Murder.  I have appealed numerous cases
to conclusion in the Virginia Court of Appeals and
Supreme Court as well as in the federal Fourth
Circuit Court of Appeals.  I am a member of the
Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers
and the Criminal Defense and Family Law sections
of the Virginia State Bar.  

My business litigation experience includes contract
and commercial code disputes, the enforcement of
mechanic's liens, commercial fraud, collections and
bankruptcy.  I am also experienced with real
estate and zoning litigation as well as government
tort claims. I have litigated cases in the state,
federal and administrative courts of Virginia, West
Virginia, Texas, New York, Delaware and
Pennsylvania

Before opening my own law office, I practiced
Employment and Business Litigation with a large
law firm  in Harrisonburg, Virginia where I served
as Chairman of the firm’s Employment Law
Group.   My experience in employment litigation
includes the defense of management in federal and
state claims involving ERISA, Title VII, The Fair
Labor Standards Act, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, the
Virginia Wage Payment Act and the Virginia
Worker's Compensation Act.  I also have
extensive experience drafting and litigating
employment agreements and non-competition
agreements.  

I live with my wife Mary Evans Lott, our daughter
Alice and our son William in Staunton, Virginia
where I serve
on the Vestry of Emmanuel
Episcopal Church
and the Board of Directors for
the Staunton Performing Arts Center
.
